ENStanislaw Kościałkowski (1881-1960), educator, historian, professor at the University of Vilnius, whose activity was focused in three directions: education, science-research, and science-organizational. As a historian, he popularised the history of Poland in numerous brochures, and set forth the methodology of this discipline in the study Historyka. He was a specialist in Polish studies and as the historian of Polish literature explored the writings of Juliusz Słowacki and he was particularly interested in oriental motives. At the beginning of 1942, sharing the fate of Polish refugees in the Soviet Union, he eventually reached the centres of oriental tradition in Uzbek cities of Kitab and Samarkanda, and in April 1942 made it to Iran and subsequently to Lebanon. In 1942-1950 he tried to seek out and popularize the traces of past Polish presence within these territories. He published an interesting brochure in French entitled L‘Iran et la Pologne ä travers les siėcles (Tehran 1943), and a book in Polish Polacy a Liban i Syria w toku dziejowym [The Poles versus Lebanon and Syria in the course of history] (Beirut 1949), later translated into French and Arabic. During his stay in the Middle East, he was very interested in the specific culture of these areas, while in his research works, bibliographic accents seem to prevail. Emotionally connected with Lebanon, upon parting with that country, he delivered in French, a beautiful lecture On the Soul of the East (April 1950). [From the publication]
