ENThe appearance of the first photographic publications about Vilnius was determined not only by the development of photography itself but also the circumstances of the time. Because of the possibilities offered by the printing technology and the ban on Lithuanian press photography in the 19th century could only find its way to the press through engravings in the Russian and Polish press. The World Exhibition in Paris of 1900 was used as an opportunity to show several hundred photographs from Lithuania and the Lithuanian press from the USA and Prussia. The real merger of photography and the Lithuanian press started only after the press ban was lifted in 1904. Publications with Vilnius photographs in Polish and German served as a continuation of 19th century guides of Vilnius and its environs, such as Władysław Zahorski’s Przewodnik po Wilnie, 1910; Katedra Wileńska, 1904; KościołŚw. Anny w Wilnie, 1905, and others. The real photographic albums of Vilnius appeared during the years of German occupation (1915-1918) with the arrival of Jan Bułhak who first made albums of Vilnius photographs by hand and later started printing them.Numerous photographs of Vilnius (by Bułhak, Stanisław Filibert Fleury and German press photographers) can be found in the illustrated supplements to German newspapers published during the War, such as Scheinwerfer and Bilderschau. A big novelty was photographic reports from Vilnius companies and institutions, street life, performances and exhibitions. The Germans also published solid Vilnius and Lithuania guides as well as a number of albums on Vilnius architecture, such as Wanderstunden in Wilna by Paul Monty, 1916; Wilna. Ein vergessene Kunststättehy Paul Weber, 1917; Bilder aus Litauen by R. Schlichting, 1917, etc. Together with the research on the history of Vilnius photography, Vilnius photography is now returning to the photographic albums and illustrated publications in Lithuania, Poland, Israel, etc. [From the publication]
