ENTadas Daugirdas (1852-1919) left a bright trace in Lithuanian culture. He was very much interested in Lithuanian history and took part in archaeological diggings, collected pieces of folk art, engaged in drawing, writing, staging plays, grew willows at his father’s estate and set up a basketry shop, organised a folk dancing group and a choir, etc. In addition to all these fields, photography should also be noted. Daugirdas’ heritage is dispersed throughout various museums, archives and libraries. The National M. K. Čiurlionis Museum holds works by Daugirdas directly related to the heritage of Kaunas City Museum. In the collection of glass negatives held at this museum, the estate of Daugirdas’ parents in Plemborg was recognised. In his photographs he focused on the surroundings of the estate, the layout of the park and the plants. Some compositions stress ethnographic elements and tools. An examination of the transfer, storage and attribution of the negatives led to a conclusion that they belonged to Daugirdas. This field of Daugirdas’ activity has not been subject to deeper study. Records have survived confirming that lie engaged in photography himself. While he was not a professional photographer, Daugirdas understood the historical value of an image. His works in photography are significant in studying the historical and cultural heritage of Lithuania. [From the publication]
