Summary / Abstract:

Paroda paskatino atidžiau pažvelgti į C. Knaufo kūrybą, jo gyvenimo Nidoje laikotarpį, aptarti kai kuriuos XIX a. pab.–XX a. I p. Nidoje veikusios dailininkų kolonijos aspektus. ENIn autumn of 2015 exhibition of Carl Knauf (1893–1944) was held in Pranas Domšaitis Gallery in Klaipėda. It was organized by the Museum of the East Prussia Region in Lüneburg (Germany). The exhibition was the first comprehensive presentation of Knauf ’s art in Lithuania after the Second World War. Knauf came from North Rhine-Westphalia. For almost a quarter of the century he was painting the Curonian Spit and Klaipėda and was among the top artist of Nida artists’ colony. In 1930 Knauf built a studio-house in Nida. He died fourteen years later and was buried in the Fishermen’ Cemetery of Nida. During 1930s–1940s Knauf was one of the most popular painters in Nida resort. Geopolitical changes in the Eastern Europe after the Second World War led to the fact that Knauf ’s art, like many other Nida artists’, had been forgotten for a long time. After the war Knauf was rarely remembered in Germany too. Today Knauf is rediscovered and re-evaluated by the art historians.Landscape was the main genre of Knauf ’s paintings. His paintings are quite easily recognizable due to the motifs, colours, realistic view, and painting technique in general. These are images of pure nature – dunes, lagoons, other water bodies, fishermen huts, mills, grain fields, landscapes of the southern countries, snow-capped Alpine mountains, and mountain huts on the slopes. Nature of the Curonian Spit creatively inspired painter. One or more large-scale Kurenkahns painted on lagoon coast or in water became a sort of Knauf’s identification mark. Traveling in Nida, the Curonian Spit, and Nemunas Delta the artist depicted both the whole and details of landscape. Knauf is a coherent observer of nature, carefully and masterfully envisioned romantic, elegiac, but realistic spirit of the Curonian Spit. Artist’s works go deeper than usual representatives of late Impressionism. They are more individualised look at ever-changing world of sand, water and clouds. [From the publication]
