EN50 years ago, philological students and graduates of Vilnius University formed the ‘Friends of India’ fellowship. Members were not only fascinated with India’s spiritual culture, attempted to compare the mythologies of Lithuania and the Vedas, but also used it as a source for drawing inspiration to grow the Lithuanian spirit. Over time, the activities of the fellowship became one of the sources for the Sąjūdis in the late 20th c. in Lithuania, a movement for the country’s freedom. In addition, the fellowship’s Chair was one of Lithuania’s most famed orientalists, Ričardas Mironas, who was the first to translate some hymns of the Rig Veda into Lithuania prior to WWII. This article quotes Ričardas Mironas’ translations, which inspired the intelligentsia of the period. Also, some similarities of Vedic mythology to Lithuanian mythology are examined: images of world creation, the mythic World Mountain, World Tree, etc. [From the publication]
