ENA review of the monograph From Traditional Polyphony to Polyphonic Tradition: Changes in Lithuanian Music in the 20th–21st c. [Nuo tradicinės polifonijos iki polifoninės tradicijos: lietuvių muzikos kaita XX–XXI a.] (Vilnius: Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore, 2016, 354 pages), by ethnomusicologist Austė Nakienė is published. The book summarises the movement for preserving and reviving folklore, having played a key role in the history of our culture and state; also the activities of modern composers and musicians who base their work on national heritage. The transition of the peasant tradition, handed down from generation to generation, to the city tradition that incorporates in various ways the old heritage, is revealed. A key accent of the book is sutartinės (polyphonic multi-part songs) – the variety in their structure, way of survival, modern forms. The researcher does not base her work on statistical dats, rather personal and professional experience is used, careful observation of cultural phenomena and intuition. This allows to connect different cultural periods, musical styles, personalities. [From the publication]
