Summary / Abstract:

LTEuropos Sąjunga (toliau – ES) suteikia šalių narių piliečiams teisių ir privilegijų, tačiau Europos Komisija (toliau – EK) akcentuoja, kad trūksta žinių apie ES vaidmenį kiekvieno piliečio kasdieniame gyvenime. Nagrinėjamos ES piliečių teisės bei galimybės, atskleidžiama visuomenės informuotumo apie europines iniciatyvas trūkumo problema. Pristatoma patirtis įgyvendinant ES informacinį edukacinį projektą, siekiant ugdyti visuomenės pilietiškumą, sąmoningumą ir bendruomeniškumą. Empiriniu tyrimu išryškinamas akademinės bendruomenės vaidmuo didinant visuomenės informuotumą apie ES. ENThe European Union (EU) provided citizens of member states with the rights and privileges, but the European Commission (EC) emphasizes that citizens lack knowledge about the EU. The European Commission Vice-President, Commissioner Viviane Redding notes, "Europe will not be understood if the politicians do not adequately explain the role the EU plays in a daily life of every citizen." European initiatives create preconditions to forecast new skills and capabilities in Europe “without borders”, promote lifelong learning, increase opportunities to deal with the EU-wide youth employment and unemployment problems, however, the lack of public awareness on these issues is obvious. Therefore, the activity of the academic community is particularly significant in the process of creation of the European civil society and education of a knowledge society – open, educated, and learning. The problem of the paper is the fact that the major part of the EU society and young people as well do not use the EU citizens' rights and opportunities properly because of the lack of information and lack of knowledge; consequently, the awareness-raising role of the academic community is significant. The aim of the article is to analyze and evaluate the experience of the academic community role in increasing public awareness of the European Union, citizens' rights and opportunities. This paper presents the experience and achievements in the implementation of the educational information project on the EU issues at the Faculty of Management and Economics in Kauno kolegija, University of Applied Sciences. The project was implemented in 2013. Project partners – participants were Kaunas College, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kaunas Europe Direct Information Centre, the European Consumer Centre, the Kaunas Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts, the Environmental Centre for Administration and Technology. Information events for Kaunas regional community and the academic community were organized and were attended by 915 participants. The project related information was publicized on the project partner websites and the city information pages. The article analyzes the performance of the project, with a view to the role of the academic community, which is identified by raising public awareness on the EU issues. Methods applied – the analysis of scientific literature, documentation and statistical data, the summary of the project activities. [From the publication]
