The idea of the painting belongs to the erudite bishop Eustachijus Valavičius (1560-1630), who asked an unknown, but extremely talented painter to create the sketch of the painting. Over the years, the painting deteriorated and was restored several times, thus it had to be urgently conserved. The restoration programme was based on historical and artistic, biological, chemical and physical examination of the painting. Moreover, detailed photofixation was carried out before, during and after the conservation of the painting and full documentation of the restoration of the painting was prepared. The restored painting “Blessed Virgin Mary and Child” was returned to the central altar of The Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Tytuvėnai.
