Summary / Abstract:

ENThe object of the present article is French and Lithuanian drama of the 20th century understood from a comparative point of view and which can be considered to be religious. The main attention is paid towards the spread of the genre of mystery (the type of drama) and its transformations. The aim of the present article is dual. First, it is to systemize the view of historical religious drama relevant to the comparative analysis, starting from the Middle Ages, paying exceptional attention towards its revival at the juncture of the 19th and 20th centuries. Second, it is to analyze the plays of the chosen authors and compare them from the point of view of presenting the saint. The literary image of the saint is explained by emphasizing his identity as a martyr, the topic of a miracle related with the saint, and the expression of the ritual action. Religious drama and specifically mystery are understood on the basis of the dialogue of literature and theology. Apart from the articles of Péguy, Claudel, Milašius, Maeterlinck and Ghelderode, the plays of Herbačiauskas, Škėma, Landsbergis and Glinskis were chosen as sources. [...].
