ENThe article commemorates professor Donatas Sauka (1929–2015), researcher of Lithuanian literature and folklore. He is presented as being one of the most important researchers of folklore, indigenous culture and an ideologist, who searched in the past for that which would give meaning to our current lives. The broad field of the professor’s cultural interest is accented, his ability to awaken young minds, provoke them, and take joy in the work of others. For many years D. Sauka was head of the Vilnius University students of Lithuanian studies (folklore) internships, later – their scientific works. D. Sauka was concerned with the accents of the aesthetic value of Lithuanian folklore. They are summarised in the monograph The Originality and Value of Folklore („Tautosakos savitumas ir vertė“, 1970). Approximately from 1970 until 2007 D. Sauka reconsidered the assessments of folklore, offered new interpretations, in the study Lithuanian Folklore („Lietuvių tautosaka“, 2007, second edition) entrenched the phenomenological approach towards anthropology, stated the significance of folklore in the formation of national consciousness.
