ENThe Aim of the Survey. To distinguish motives for participation in leisure time physical activity among Lithuanian 5-12 grade schoolchildren, and the factors influencing those motives. The Object and Methods of the Survey. In 2013, applying nested random selection / sampling method, 3284 schoolchildren of 5-12 grades from twenty Lithuanian pro-gymnasiums, gymnasiums and secondary schools located in different cities and districts were selected. The respondents were given a Questionnaire to identify schoolchildren‘s demographic data, assess physical activity level (recommended by the WHO) as well as motivation for participation in leisure time physical activity. Results. It has been established during the survey, that the majority (81.0 %) of Lithuanian 5-12 grade schoolchildren are not sufficiently active in doing physical activities. Four motives for participation in leisure time physical activity among Lithuanian 5-12 grade schoolchildren have been distinguished: health and physical fitness motive, social aspect, achievement motive for sport participation and competition with peers. Key factors influencing the health and physical fitness motive for participation in leisure time physical activity have been female gender, senior age and opinion about one‘s own body considering it too fat (p<0.001). The schoolchildren who considered their body too lean participated in physical activity related to health and physical fitness motive more rarely (p<0.001). The factors influencing the social aspect for participation in leisure time physical activity consisted of junior age and non-urban living environment (p<0.01). Achievement motive for sport participation manifested itself at higher degree among boys and junior schoolchildren (p<0.001) as well as among schoolchildren who live in urban areas (p<0.01).The main factors that caused the competition with peers motive for participation in leisure time physical activity consisted of male gender, junior age (p<0.001), living in non-urban area (p<0.05) and sufficient leisure time physical activity (p<0.01). Findings. The association between the subjects‘ motives for participation in leisure time physical activity and gender, age, living area, level of leisure time physical activity and attitude towards schoolchildren‘s own body has been established. Taking into account the gender, differences in living environment and integrating the aspect of motivation for doing physical activity, special and safe educational physical activity promotion strategies and methods should be created and adapted that would allow reduction in number of passive schoolchildren in terms of engagement in physical activity.
