ENIn the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’s capital Vilnius, an institution of higher education, the University, was establish due to international approval, secular and ecclesiastical authority cooperation, founders, patrons and public support. On December 24, 1569, four Jesuits from Braunsberg arrive in Vilnius, among them vice provincial Francisco Sunieri from Rome, to “look around”. After some time the approval was given to establish a college. The main organizer was Vilnius bishop Valerijonas Protasevičius who prepared everything (including the fact that on May 12, 1570, the library of the recently deceased suffragan Jurgis Albinijus was made over to the newly established college). On July 4, 1570, fourteen Jesuits led by Austrian Provincial Lawrence led Maggio, came to Vilnius. On July 17, 1570, St. Alex day was announced as the official day of the establishment of the Jesuit College in Vilnius (it was celebrated annually remembering the donation and donators). The Jesuits, establishing Vilnius college and university library, laid the foundations for Catholic system of information institutions, which guided the greater part of similar memory institutions of the Great Duchy of Lithuania.
