ENThe word Lith. vienat originated from the case form (nom.-acc.sg.neutr. or dat.-loc.sg.masc.) of the adjective vienatas, -a or vienatis, -ė. The article investigates its usage and meaning in old Lithuanian texts. It seems that the primary function of the word was adverbial, and its meaning – aspectual ʻconstantly, permanently, continuallyʼ. Other word functions (that of particle and conjunction) and a limiting, restriction or emphatic meaning of the word developed gradually later on. [From the publication]
