ENOn the basis of the most recent studies the author established some new facts in Skirgaila's, 01- gierd’s son’s life (ca. 1353-1394). The year 1353 may be considered to be an a quo date of birth. In 1373 Skirgaila owned his own duchy, probably that of Vitebsk. For sure, the Orthodox baptism was adopted by him before 1379. In spite of the commonly accepted view, Skirgaila did not die unmarried and childless. He had a daughter who was baptized in Cracow in 1393. Skirgaila reigned in Kiev, although very briefly, in 1394. It was Skirgaila’s death that paved the way to Witold to take full power in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and not the 1392 Treaty of Ostrov. [From the publication]
