ENGreat Duke of Lithuania Gedimin, ca. 1275-1341, was a pagan, but many of his sons and descendants became Christians before the baptism of Jagiełło and Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1386. Most of them belonged to the Orthodox Church and the paper presents the consequences of this fact. As the members of the Orthodox Church they could not hold the most important high offices. It seems that it was the result of their Eastern Christianity as well as of their origin that they could threaten Jagiellons. Because of their religion they were treated as Ruthenians. Their economic support and attachment to the Orthodox Church became an important reason of the delay of the Roman Catholic Church’s triumph in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and - as a consequence - the delay of the forming of a specific nobility nation of the Commonwealth of the Two Nations.
