ENThe article “Gente lithuanus, natione polonus? Defining szlachta’s identity in the middle of 19th century Lithuania” analyses the linguistic constructions used by the Lithuanian nobles’ (szlachta) to define their social identity in the texts written after the 1830-1831 uprising against the Russian Empire (the collection of memoirs prepared by Feliks Wrotnowski in Paris, 1835, and Adam Mickiewicz’s epos Pan Tadeusz, published in Paris, 1834). The texts reveal the nobles’ identity in transition from the traditional relational identity (determined by the citizenship in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) towards the modern cathegorical identity (determined by the cathegory of land). During this process, incompatible and yet inseparable cultural differences emerged, but were expressed by the formula gente lithuanus, natione polonus only in the late 19th century. The article argues that this formula is inappropriate as a historiographical term for the definition of the pre-modern szlachta’s identity because it functioned in the context of modern nationalism as a compromise between traditional and modern identity forms.
