ENThe subject of the article are the local names of the Vilnius-Trakai district in the Vilnius region within the years 1924-1939. Ethnic heterogenity of the area is reflected in the toponymy. These lands were inhabited by the original tribes of Lithuania. From this period came the local names of the Lithuanian cores, in the vast majority created of hydronyms. The loss in population resulted in another wave of migration and settlement of the area that is of interest to us. Recorded in the mid-XIII century, a significant population growth has contributed to the creation of new settlements. In the onomastic material we have noted an increase in names formed from Polish words, which confirms the reduction of the role of the Old Belarusian language. After Poland regained its independence, it was necessary to standardize terminology. In 1939 Vilniusand the formerpartofthe Vilnius area was ruled by Lithuania, Vilniaus krašto gyvenamųjų vietų vardai have been prepared, less than a year later (1940) at the initiative of the Institute of Lithuanian Language had prepared Vilniaus srities vietovardžiai containing Lithuanian variants of toponyms. The newest list of the area of research started from 2007 have been created. Transpositions of toponyms of former Lithuanian Vilnius-Trakai district can be divided into several groups: phonetic, pairs of semantically related names, unchanged pairs of names, and pairs of unrelated names.
