ENIn the historical memory of the modem Lithuanian armed forces the battle of Durbė is considered significant from many military perspectives. During the Interwar period the battle of Durbė was mentioned and remembered in various contexts and was often recognised as one of the major Lithuanian victories in official public speeches and publications. In the period of 1923-1927 the Military School graduates used to be rewarded with special officer swords. Each sword was engraved with the names of 12 most famous battles. This was supposed to reflect the victories and the continuity of the Lithuanian armed forces. The Soviet occupation of 1940 disrupted Lithuanian statehood and military history, but was unable to destroy the memory of historical identity. The Restoration of the Lithuanian Independence in 1990 was followed by the restoration of the Lithuanian armed forces. It continues the traditions admired not only during the Interwar period, but also throughout the period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It must be emphasised that the victory in the Battle of Durbė is one of many other achievements of the Lithuanian armed forces, which took place throughout different periods of history. Despite the fact that the Lithuanian armed forces have achieved many victories, the question, which is the most important one, is still debatable. [From the publication]
