ENThe article presents the fate of the Paransevičius family during World War II, when they were forced to leave the homeland in Sankūrai and against their own will move to Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic. Unfortunately, there were a lot of families who struggled whether to leave their homes or stay under the occupation of Germans. Furthermore, a few Lithuanians from Suvalkai region were forced to leave their homes. Although Lithuanians who lived in Poland were afraid of the repressions, majority of them did not want to move to other places. However, the exile to the Soviet Union was inevitable. Regardless of difficult conditions the Paransevičius family did never lose their hopes to come back to Sankūrai. However, due to the harsh war reality the odds were almost impossible to overcome. Therefore, the Paransevičius stayed in Lithuania until 1944, when the Soviet soldiers entered the northern part of Poland. The family took advantage of the new geopolitical situation, managed to cross the border and came back home. The happiness did not last long. The newly established Polish communist government was enormously suspicious and hostile towards people who had come back from the Soviet Union. Lithuanians who had come back were discriminated by the local authorities and even asked to leave. Nevertheless, the vast majority of Lithuanians did not want to go anywhere. Local authorities of Security Service (UB) encouraged the officers to threaten vulnerable and peaceful Lithuanians and allowed them to use violence. One of the victims of those atrocious actions was Kastantas Paransevičius who was murdered in his own backyard by Edward Gorbala on August 14, 1945. The circumstances leading to the tragic event were fully investigated almost 70 years later by Institute of National Remembrance, Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in Białystok.
