ENThe work investigates the public school organized by the Marian priests in Marijampolė in the last quarter of the 18th c. and first decades of the 19th c. It is affirmed that this was a middle level (sub district type) institution of learning that adhered to the traditions of classical, humanities education. The remaining documents bear witness to its individuality: independence (it was not subordinate to the Education Commission), uninterrupted direction of education (patriotic orientation) and in the context of the period modem educational rules. The outlines of the latter are reconstructed relying on manuscript sources from the junction of the 18th-19th centuries. The problems of its practical implementation are discussed. The main task of the school, whose policies are discussed, was the education of the lower nobility. The hypothesis is raised that the Marian pedagogues were oriented to the progressive education institution of the enlightenment era - the college of the nobles. The analysis of the notes of the monastery school in Marijampolė allows one to grasp the psychological rudiments of the periods of the age, the originality of the concepts of childhood and youth. The Marian school no longer represented the baroque mentality. [From the publication]
