The 2004 presidential and parliamentary elections in Lithuania

LTStraipsnyje užsienio akademinė auditorija supažindinama su 2004 m. Lietuvos Respublikos Seimo ir Prezidento rinkimų rezultatais, pateikiama Lietuvos politinio gyvenimo dinamikos apžvalga. Pirmiausiai pristatoma Lietuvos Respublikos prezidento rinkimų sistema, aptariama 2004 m. situacija visuomenėje po prieštaringai vertinamo buvusio prezidento R. Pakso atstatydinimo, prezidento rinkimų kampanijos tendencijos. Pažymima, kad gana įtemptoje situacijoje įvykę prezidento rinkimai nustelbė pirmuosius rinkimus į Europos Parlamentą, įvertinamas politinių partijų paramos kandidatams į prezidentus pasiskirstymas bei galutiniai rinkimų rezultatai. Antroje straipsnio dalyje pristatoma Lietuvos partinės sistemos struktūra, pagrindinės parlamentinės partijos kairės-dešinės kontinuume, taip pat pagrindiniai politiniai klausimai, dominavę 2004 m. Seimo rinkimų kampanijoje bei galutiniai rinkimų rezultatai bei naujos sudėties Seimo struktūra. Straipsnyje svarstomos partinės sistemos fragmentacijos priežastys, prieinama išvados, kad V. Adamkaus laimėjimas 2004 m. ENThe article presents the results of the election of the Parliament and the President of the Republic of Lithuania of 2004, and delivers the overview of then political life in Lithuania to the academic society abroad. First, it describes the system of presidential election in Lithuania and discusses the situation after the removal of controversial President Rolandas Paksas in 2004 as well as analyses tendencies of the Presidential Election Campaign of 2004. It states that the election of the President, organised under such stressed conditions, neglected the very first election to the European Parliament. Then, the article evaluates the support of political parties to presidential candidates and analyses final results of the election. The second part of the article presents the structure of political system in Lithuania, the main parties of the Parliament under the continuum of left and right, the main political problems addressed during the election campaign of 2004, as well as final results of the election and the composition of newly formed Parliament. The article discusses sources of political fragmentation and concludes that the victory of Valdas Adamkus in presidential election of 2004 was a step forward to political stability of a state notwithstanding that disappointed masses still supported such political parties who base their positions on anti-systemic rhetoric statements (Labour Party, Liberal Democracy Party).
