ENThe paper aims at describing the path that led Čiurlionis to develop the individual style of his musical paintings. First, emphasis is put on his first paintings presenting them as a result of inspiration stemming from imagination triggered by musical sounds. Then the process of creating the musical paintings of 1907 and 1908 is described. The analogies found between paintings and piano compositions show that Čiurlionis must have been sketching the form of his paintings while improvising on the piano and using his imagination to transfer musical structures to the painting. Thus the sketchy piano compositions need to be considered as by-products of his creative process. [From the publication]
