ENThis article seeks to demonstrate how representative a source for researching members of elite of the nobility, the Oginskis, is the i8lh century record books of the castle and land courts of Vilnius district. The i8lh century record books of the castle and land courts of Vilnius district contain some information about the Oginski family, but it is not abundant. Castle court record books mention the Oginskis much more often than the land court records do. The files mainly contain information on violent crimes whereas information on non-violent or economic arrangements is scarce. Majority of legal processes involving the Oginskis were against other nobles, although there are some known cases of legal disputes with city folk and Jews. Files related to rural areas often mention peasants. This research demonstrated, that legal status of the Oginskis wasn't always the same. In litigation processes involving property the Oginskis would often take part in person. Sometimes members of the Oginski family represented, defended or were accused over the interests of their subordinates or individuals who approached the dukes asking for help. However, often there is no way to clarify what kind of relationship was between such individuals and the Oginskis.Sometimes, in legal cases, the dukes were either co-plaintiffs or co-defendants with other nobles, middle level or lower nobility and representatives of other estates. Records of castle and land courts of Vilnius district sometimes yield information about processes involving the Oginskis in matters of ownership, illegal detainment or debts. Among the files on violent crimes the majority of cases were on assaults, illegal incarcerations, robberies and home invasions. Often charges in cases were on several types of crimes. Although book records of castle and land courts of Vilnius district were mainly describing conflicts taking place in that area, when it came to the Oginskis the Duchy of Samogitia, districts of Trakai, Ashmyany and others were also mentioned. In district of Vilnius two properties of the Oginskis were mentioned most often: the Ogiński Palace in the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Eldership of Verbai. [From the publication]
