ENFrom 1945 two history departments functioned in Vilnius Pedagogical Institute - the Department of Universal History and the Department of the History of USSR Nations. As the number of students reduced, the Faculty of History was closed and the former teachers of history departments were moved to a single History Department. The department existed from 1956 to 1968 and belonged to the Faculty of Russian Language and Literature, later - Nature-Geography Faculty. Assoc, prof. Abelis Stažas (1914-?), who was the head of the History Department throughout the period under analysis, senior teacher Ana Aleksandrova (1916-1994), assoc, prof. Leonas Bičkauskas-Gentvila (1910-2003), assoc, prof. Juozas Galvydis (1896-1982), assoc, prof. Rokas Varakauskas (1922-1975), senior teacher Stefanija Petrauskaitė (1908-1986), assoc, prof. Michailas Heltzeris (1928-2010), assoc, prof. Algirdas Rakūnas (1926-2004), assoc, prof. Zenonas Pilkauskas (born in 1929) worked at the department. These pedagogues who dedicated all or nearly all their activities to school teacher training are well-known in the Lithuanian pedagogue community. There were also people at the department for whom the work at Vilnius Pedagogical Institute was only a short stop on the road of their lives. During a very complex period of existence of Lithuanian society the employees of the History Department were subject to complex issues of youth education, education of the general public, teacher training and in-service training as well as their qualification improvement. One of the key tasks set by the Soviet government was the formation of Marxist worldviews. The department employees could not disregard the requirements of the government and the Communist Party but they sought for the ways to provide students and teachers with whom continuous relations were maintained with as objective image of historical processes as possible in the course of academic classes and to render the knowledge of the history of Lithuania through other educational forms. The Faculty of History was re-opened in 1968. The former teachers of the History Department made up the core of two departments - the Department of Universal History and the Department of USSR History. [From the publication]
