EN[...] The object of this article is the innovations made by Janulaitis in public activities and science. The aim of the article is to discuss the innovations introduced by Janulaitis in the Lithuanian science of history and public life. The sources of this study are the publications of Augustinas Janulaitis of various types in the Lithuanian press of the first half of the 20th century, his scientific works and unpublished documents (correspondence, minutes of the meetings of university faculties and the Lithuanian Historical Society, responses, etc.). Janulaitis saw the research work of history as a part of public activities. His first articles about the Social Democratic movement were of political and public type; they distinguished by the criticism targeted at the Catholic political movement and the government of the Russian Empire. The publication of his works on the topic of history based on sources began in 1910. The patriarch of the legal history of Independent Lithuania perceived the history of Lithuania from a positivist perspective - as the history of social classes. Janulaitis was the first to criticise the romantic theories of Lithuanian ethnogen- esis. He considered the Jewish nation a part of the Lithuanian society and the history of local Jews would always find a place in his surviving manuscript works. Janulaitis was one of the first to highlight the threats of Soviet Russia and Bolshevism to Lithuania. He believed that Lithuanian democratic forces could act hand in hand with Polish democrats. However, his attitudes did not make an influence on the Lithuanian society and historiography back then. [From the publication]
