ENThe Lithuanian national minority education changes that took place in 2011 met determined opposition from the representatives of minorities, as well as criticism from the international community. This article aims to discuss these changes in the context of international standards and practices, particularly in the context of the principle of nondiscrimination and equal opportunities. The article will consider international standards on the role of language in the education of minorities and examine how to deal with the tension that arises between state policy makers, who are often convinced that in the name of "integration" or "national unity" children should, as soon as possible, learn and receive education only in the state language, and those who emphasize the benefits that arise from teaching in the mother tongue. It will in particular emphasise the need to seek a balance, in each case having in mind the needs and welfare of minority children. [From the publication]
