ENKsaveras Sakalauskas-Vanagėlis, even though a little bit forgotten, is an interesting representative of the Lithuanian literature of the late 19th and the early 20th century. He wrote a lot of poems and fairy tales for children and for adults. Some of his poems became songs and the music was written by well-known composers, such as J. Naujalis. Ksaveras Sakalauskas-Vanagėlis was a very noble man who devoted his life to his countrymen and homeland, which was the biggest challenge and obligation for him. He was born in 1863 in Kalesninkai, Simnas Parish. His family spoke Polish at home, therefore he learned Lithuanian while playing with his peers. His national consciousness started to shape up in his youth when he attended schools in Vilkaviškis, Simnas and others. He graduated from the seminary for teacher and started to work. One of his working places was in Berznykas. During that period he began to cooperate with the Lithuanian underground press and therefore he was transferred to Łomża. However, he did not stop his socio-cultural and educational activities and founded the Association of Lithuanians in Łomża. He was moved to Warsaw, where he spent the last 30 years of his life.
