LTApie prezidento A. Smetonos šeimą rašyta daug, tačiau paprastai visa informacija pateikiama atsižvelgiant į žmonių pasakojimus, atsiminimus, todėl neretai ji gali būti klaidingai interpretuojama. Prieš dvidešimt metų Lietuvių kalbos institute rastas ranka pieštas A. Smetonos genealoginis medis, kuris vėliau pavadintas anoniminiu. Straipsnio tikslas yra priskirti šiam medžiui autorystę ir apžvelgti A. Smetonos genealogiją remiantis rašytiniais šaltiniais – metrikomis, kurios atskleidžia daugumos prezidento gimtosiose apylinkėse gyvenusių Smetonų giminystės ryšius. ENAlmost twenty years ago, some loose pages of a manuscript were found in the library of the Institute of the Lithuanian language. It was a transcript of seventeenth-nineteenth- century registers of births, marriages, and deaths of Roman Catholic churches. The family name of Smetona was recurrent on many of those pages. Among the notes, there was also President Antanas Smetona’s family tree drawn by hand by an unknown author. A few decades have passed from the day when the transcripts of the registers were found. The authors of this paper decided to examine the reliability of the transcripts and the family tree of the Smetona family found among them. First of all, the copies of the manuscript from the Institute of the Lithuanian language were compared against the registers in the Lithuanian State Historical Archive. After reliability of the transcripts was assured, a search for more manuscripts and transcripts of registers was carried out at the Institute of the Lithuanian language and it yielded results. In addition, the anonymous author of the family tree of President Smetona was determined: it was drawn by Kazimieras Gasparavičius (1908–1983), a Lithuanian linguist. Most likely he was the first to produce President Smetona’s family tree that was based on a reliable source of information – the registers, and not on reminiscences. In recent years, unverified and not fully reliable information about the family of the first president of the Republic of Lithuania has been spreading on the internet where the names are distorted and wrong dates are given. This is because the said information is derived from stories and reminiscences. However, it is written sources that are the most reliable way to check the genealogy of one’s family. In this paper, all facts are based on registers of births, marriages, and deaths of Roman Catholic churches and can help the members of this particular family in obtaining precise information on the family history.
