ENThe basic aim of the book The Polish Minority in the Kaunas Region of Lithuania. A sociolinguistic study is to show the interdependence between the structure of the society and the structure of its lingual repertoire and also an attempt to point out the casual relations between both categories of the phenomena on the basis of the Polish minority in the Kaunas area of Lithuania (in the valley of the Nevėžis river) and the spoken Polish language of those people. Thus, the aim of this paper is the universal sociological, ethnological and sociolingual description of the Polish minority in the Kaunas area of Lithuania and its language, as well as to establish of the mutual correlation between the two subjects of description. The subject of research, which are the Poles living in Kaunas region and its language, has never been described in scientific literature, except for a few references. The Kaunas type of the Polish language is a social type. Its origin, development and its current steady decline are connected with historical social processes. In the realisation of the Kaunas type of the Polish language all the former state relationships have been reflected. Therefore the area of Kaunas region of Lithuania is one of the finest „sociolingual laboratories” imaginable. The researcher of the written texts from the 19th century, Z. Sawaniewska-Mochowa came to the conclusion that in the Kaunas region there functioned three types of the Polish language: a general language with regional features, the language of the provincial noblemen and the language of the polonized Lithuanian peasants (ref. Sawaniewska-Mochowa 2000). [...]. [From the publication]
