In the eye of the storm: books in the conflict between the Jesuits and the University of Kraków (1622-1634)

LTStraipsnyje nagrinėjama spauda konflikto tarp Jėzuitų ir Krokuvos Universiteto metais (1622-1634). Dvylika metų trukęs konfliktas paliko ryškią žymę šiuo periodu spausdintose knygose ir kitose publikacijose. Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos konflikto metu spausdintos brošiūros, aptariamas jų kaip polemikos įrankio bei istorinio šaltinio vaidmuo. Taip pat plačiai pristatomas šių brošiūrų išleidimo kontekstas bei atskleidžiami įvairūs leidybos aspektai Lenkijoje po Tridento susirinkimo 1563-iaisais. Galiausiai, straipsnyje atskleidžiama kaip kontrreformacija formavo požiūrį į poleminius tekstus bei kokią įtaką darė jų paskelbimui. Atliktas tyrimas parodė, jog 1622-1634 m. išspausdintos knygos atspindėjo pagrindines to meto leidybos problemas: knygų cenzūrą bei religinio konflikto poveikį leidžiamai literatūrai, dėl kurio buvo sukurta didelis skaičius politinių brošiūrų. Dauguma brošiūrų buvo anoniminės, nenurodyta leidimo vieta ir data, kadangi spauda konflikto metu buvo ne tik ginklas, bet ir taikinys. Abi konfliktuojančios pusės išvystė savas taktikas: Jėzuitai stengėsi veikti įstatymo ribose, o Universitetas kliovėsi neoficialiais metodais. Brošiūrų gausą lėmė abiejų institucijų pobūdis: jų bendruomenės buvo išsilavinusios, apsiskaičiusios, raštingos – leidyba buvo kone kasdienė ordino ir universiteto veikla. ENThe article deals with the press in the years of the conflict between the Jesuits and the University of Krakow (1622-1634). The twelve-year-long conflict left a striking mark on books and other publications published during this period. The article deals with the brochures printed during the conflict, discusses their role as a polemical tool and a historical source. The context of these brochures is also widely presented, as well as the various aspects of publishing in Poland after the Trident meeting in 1563. Finally, the article reveals how counterreformation shaped the attitude towards polemical texts and the influence that they made on their publication. The research carried out showed that books published in 1622-1634 reflected the major issues of publishing those years: book censorship and the impact of religious conflict on allowed literature, which led to the creation of a large number of political brochures. Most of the brochures were anonymous, the location and date of the permit were not specified, as the press during the conflict was not only a weapon but also a target. The two sides of the conflict developed their own tactics: the Jesuits tried to work within the law, and the University relied on unofficial methods. The abundance of brochures was shaped by the nature of the two institutions: their communities were educated, well-trained, and literate - publishing was a routine operation of the Order and the University. It is noted that in the 70s of the 17th century, the laws of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth were created that had to protect Catholicism from the spreading Protestantism, but they also applied to Catholic press which did not conform to the doctrines that led to the formalization of censorship of books.
