ENThe paper discusses the Lithuanian names of hemlock. Phytonyms based on maud- arc related with mausti ‘to ache’, according to the effort of poison. Liaugara seems to conserve a former meaning *“reason for pain, causing pain’, derived from a verb Balt. < *leug- ‘to cause pain, sickness’, a ccntum-liko reflex < I.-E. leug- ‘to break, to cause pain’. Besides one finds some generalized names and derivates from these names with prefixes as šun- ‘dog-’, pikt- ‘malicious’: pikty- bropė, šungardoklis. Pietmonis is suggested to derive from *piemonis ‘deceiver, cheater’, by terms of folk-etymology, which could be a relic from Curonian substrate. [From the publication]
