ENThe author of the article attempts to review the documents found in the archives and collections of manuscripts relating to forest Birštonas and Prienai County (focusing more on villages near Šešupė) as well as to show the period when Counts Butleriai ruled (1644-1782). That was the period of severe trials for Lithuania. There were wars and epidemics; however the Butleriai founded new villages by dividing the forest of Birštonas and populating them. They built a manor on the banks of Šešupė river and founded a city Staropolė (later Marijampolė), where the Butleriai invited the monks of the Order of Marian Fathers. The next step was the establishment of Marijampolė parish. The author of the article analyses the most important and the most interesting documents: the Registers of Prienai Parish, the Inventories of the County, memorabilia from the Butleriai's archive. The documents help to trace the history of villages near Šešupė and to create new interpretations of events. [From the publication]
