ENBruno of Querfurt (974-1009) was a monk, missionary and saint. He came from a wealthy family of Saxon and began his career at the court of Emperor Otto III. In 998 he entered the Benedictine monastery in Rome and then joined the hermits of St. Romuald. After he was consecrated to a missionary bishop in 1004, he embarked on a first mission to Hungary, Poland, Rus and the Pechenegs. In his last mission he went to Prussia (Yotvingia). Then, continuing the mission, probably in Lithuania, he was martyred (on the border with Russia). He was canonized, but his worship quickly disappeared. At the end of the 16th century there was a separation of his cult as St. Bruno and St. Boniface (from his religious name). Since then, the cult has been growing mainly in the environment of Benedictines and Camaldolese monks. In modern times, there have been many hypotheses about the place of his death and activities, which gave a new impulse to his worship and places of memory (Giżycko, Łomża and recently in Lithuania). The interest in St. Bruno is now moderate, generally limited to the historiography of Poland, Lithuania and Germany (episodically Russia). There is not a modern biography of St. Bruno (the only one was written in 1907) and his cult is not widely spread, which is not adequate for the role he played in his times. [From the publication]
