ENPārdaugava Duchy (Ducatus Transdunensis) was established in summer 1566 after unsuccessful peace negotiations between Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Grand Duchy of Moscow. It was an autonomous part of Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Grand Duke of Lithuania was also the Duke of Pārdaugava Duchy (Ducatus Transdnensis) at the same time. Count Yan Hodkiewicz was appointed as the administrator of the Duchy, and he maintained this post during all the period examined in the present paper. During the first years of existence of the Duchy a successful campaign against Sweden took place, the objective of which was maintaining the territory of the Duchy and it expanding in North Western direction. The attempt of the Duchy to fully incorporate Rīga Town was not successful; it turned out that the Duchy was not well enough prepared for the 1577 invasion of Russia, and therefore it must be admitted that as a political project Pārdaugava Duchy (Ducatus Transdunensis) was not successful. In Latvian and Lithuanian historiography little attention has been given to Pārdaugava Duchy (Ducatus Transdunensis). In contemporary Latvian consciousness this historical period is associated with Poland, “Polish times” and horrors of the Livonian War. As for the image of the Lithuanian – the representative of Grand Duchy of Lithuania in folklore, he is mainly viewed as a violent foreigner. [From the publication]
