Summary / Abstract:

[Iš leidinio]On the basis of research data and texts of foreign travel writing about Lithuania, the article discusses the features of egodocuments, i.e. autobiographic writings in the first person, in the view of propaganda and dissemination of stereotypes. It has been established that the boundary between an intimate narrative and a text aimed at the public, seeking to influence and shape opinion, often used to be determined by the process of the preparation of egodocuments for publication. Majority of the texts exploited in the research are attributable to commenting on public affairs, with elements of autobiographical narrative. However, there are some unpurged narratives in the first person, reflecting the author’s immediate experiences, intimate occurrences and emotions. One of such texts, attributable to this category, is Travel Diary, 1570-1578 by the Swiss Heinrich Wolf; here the episodes of his visit in Lithuania and its capital city Vilnius are authentic and little influenced by stereotypes, as he was writing for himself and not for a public.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Autobiografinė raštija; Dienoraštis; Egodokumentai; Egodokumentinis paveldas; Intymus pasakojimas; Kelionės aprašymas; Atsiminimai; Propaganda; Stereotipai; An intimate narrative; Autobiographic writings; Diary; Egodocuments; Egodocuments' heritage; Intimate narrative; Lithuania; Memoir; Propaganda; Stereotypes; Travel writing; Travel writings.

ENIn the Age of Enlightenment there was a trend towards campaigning and propaganda, with the aim of ideologically validating the superiority of a certain country or nation over another one, of diminishing economic and cultural achievements of the neighbours. Quite widespread were negative judgements of the abundant Jewish community in Lithuania. On the whole, the features of egodocumental travel writing of foreigners and the width of the range are determined by a broad variety of authors’ identities which had been affected by different cultural, social and confessional experiences of the writers.
