ENThe Lithuanian law traditions are very old. In this article the heritage of Lithuanian state law is analysed and the sources of the law as well as its roots and ways of formation by the end of XIV century are reviewed. It is stated that till the end of XIV century the custom was the prevailing source of law in the Great Duchy of Lithuania. The law of custom normalised and determined private life and legal relations as a system of regulation by the decision of the Grand Duke or other dukes empowered by the Grand Duke. The letters of the Grand Duke Gediminas and the documents of diplomacy as the source of law are researched. The study briefly presents the sources of Prussian law and the problem of its validity in the Lithuanian state. It is emphasised that the legal system in Lithuania originated in XIV century.
