ENIn the article, the activity and career of professor Marian Morelowski at the Faculty of Arts of Stephen Báthory University in Vilnius (from 1930 to 1939) is described in detail. New facts about his distinct role on the cultural scene of Vilnius in organising large events and decorating the city with great attention to small details are presented. So far unknown facts about Morelowski’s encounter with the law are revealed. The author of the article introduces two sources, which have so far not been widely analysed by the researchers into the history of Vilnius – “The Description of the Basic Conservation Works on the Historical Monuments of Vilnius” by Morelowski (1942), and another work directly related and derived from the first one, “The List of the Main Monuments of Art of Vilnius Damaged During the Military Actions in July 1944”. While analysing Morelowski’s activity, the role of other prominent figures who directly or indirectly cooperated with him in assessing the damage caused to the city of Vilnius during World War II is discussed. Morelowski has been chosen as the central subject of the article because he has received the least research attention in scholarly works as a participant of the process of assessing the damage caused to the city during the war at the end of 1944. Although the majority of institutions of heritage conservation were obliged by the highest state and municipal authorities to carry out damage assessment, the related documentation is scattered and fragmentary. The author of the article explains the process of assessing the damage caused to the oldest part of Vilnius, points out the main institutions that commissioned and carried out damage assessment, and reveals the influence of the documentation related with this process on the subsequent research and urban development of the Old Town of Vilnius.
