ENThe article presents the Archbishop of Vilnius Mečislovas Reinys as the Apostle of Divine Mercy. The pastor just lived in God’s mercy. It is especially revealed in his way of life full of suffering. In 1942 Mečislovas Reinys after recovering from bombing injuries, was the first to approve the prayer of Divine Mercy chaplet in Lithuanian, and in 1946 he introduced the 2nd Easter Sunday in Vilnius St. Johns’ Church as the Feast of Divine Mercy. Archbishop Reinys lived in Vilnius for three times: he studied at Vilnius Theological Seminary, in 1914 after returning from his studies abroad, worked as a pastor, finally in 1940, he was appointed the archbishop – coadjutor of Vilnius and returned to the archdiocese as a pastor again. The article discusses the latter period of Reinys life. Not accidentally Reinys was appointed to Vilnius. Vilnius region was incorporated into Lithuania, so it was necessary not only to raise the material well-being of the citizens, but also spiritual: the archdiocese consisted of mixed nations, the majority of the population were Poles, so often there were conflicts between the Lithuanian and Polish, and Lithuanian pastoral care was very poor. So regarding the request of Lithuanian government to allot a bishop to Vilnius, Vatican designated Reinys as Vilnius bishop in 1940.Reinys, famous for his diplomatic skills, wide erudition and tolerance, having high authority as a pastor in the rest of Lithuania, in Vilnius diocese met with a lot of challenges. Among the changing civil powers, global turmoil, national conflicts between Lithuanian and Polish, he remains humble, respectful to different outlooks and tries to spread the Gospel. In communicating either with national minorities or civil powers, he uses his diplomatic experience, scientific knowledge or practice which he gained in 1919 when he was first arrested and imprisoned in Ryga and Smolensk prisons.
