ENIn the present research, the nature of the missions and priorities of the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities (1855-1865) and the Museum of Antiquities under the Vilnius Public Library (1867-1915) are compared. The tendencies and paradigms of exhibiting the history of Lithuania in these museums are revealed. A conclusion is made that in its presentation of the history of Lithuania, the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities followed the approach of historical positivism and sought an objective reflection of the history of Lithuania. In the meantime, the research and presentation of archaeology and prehistory in the exhibition of the Museum of Antiquities under the Vilnius Public Library was determined by the development of archaeology in the Russian Empire and the implementation of the so-called programme of the restoration of the Russian origin in the North Western Region. The author bases her research on the assessment of the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities and the Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission led by Adam Honory Kirkor (1818-1886) as a temple of the history of Lithuania and the designation of the Museum of Antiquities under the Vilnius Public Library led by Eustachy Tyszkiewicz (1814-1873) as a Russian museum.
