Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article discusses on health of Sovereign Aleksandras Jogailaitis (Alexander I Jagiellon) and its acute deterioration in 1505–1506 which on 19 August 1506 resulted in the Sovereign’s death in Vilnius. The author lists symptoms of the Sovereign’s ailments recorded in the sources, introduces physicians who treated Jogailaitis at that time, and offers his coevals’ opinion on the quality of the medical care provided. Unfortunately, due to limited information in the sources, it is impossible to establish the cause of death. The author presents circumstances surrounding the drawing up of the Sovereign’s testament signed on 24 July 1506 in Lida, and points out that the Sovereign’s last wish to be buried in Wawel was not fulfilled. The article exhaustively analyses earlier publications of the Sovereign’s will, its surviving copies and the situation pertaining to their storage. The article concludes with the testament of Aleksandras Jogailaitis. [From the publication]
