Sinonimiški atitikmenys dvikalbiuose žodynuose

ENWhen planning the compilation of a bilingual dictionary the authors must take several key decisions on problems related to transfer of the semantics of the source language to the target language. This paper discusses one of important questions of the providing of semantic information connected to the presentation of the synonymic equivalents. It may be difficult to determinate how many equivalents each entry has in the target language. Analysis of many entries raises doubt concerning the oft-repeated statement in lexicography that the abundance of synonymic equivalents is a praiseworthy indication of bilingual dictionaries. However the abundance of synonyms could cause trouble for many dictionary users. Taking as a point of departure the Norwegian-Lithuanian dictionary with which I have some experience myself I present several of the dilemmas typically encountered by lexicographers when compiling bilingual dictionaries.
