ENThe purpose of the research is to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of self-dependent reading in primary school (1-4 forms). Evaluating the current situation of self-dependent reading at school and finding out attitudes towards the book and its role in life we decided to look for various means, which stimulate interest in reading. We looked for the ways of organizing more self-dependent reading lessons and also introduced various children literature to schoolchildren. The aim was to study the advantages of self-dependent reading, analyze the disadvantages, present as many ways and methods as possible, organizing interesting lessons, and develop a wish to read books of different genres. Schoolchildren participated in self-dependent reading activities, e. g. lessons, events, actions, discussions, made illustrations, etc. The study was done in this way: firstly it was found out how self-dependent reading is organized at school now and whether lessons on self-dependent reading are given. Secondly, schoolchildren were asked to give their opinion about books and reading, evaluate their individual reading skills, analyze motivation to read and give preferences in literature genres by forms. The list of literature recommended for reading was made up. The lessons of self-dependent reading were observed, the schoolchildren were motivated to read books and take part in general projects: various book events, actions, contests making illustrations. The cycle of self-dependent reading lessons is also presented. This research may serve changing the current attitudes towards self-dependent reading and helping teachers to organize this complicated process. [From the publication]
