ENDuring the transitional period of Lithuanian economy from the planned to a market system, significant transformational changes are taking place. Basically, they are stimulated by the new market economy development factors such as consolidation of the national economy and system as well as competitive ability. In 2001-2004, an international comparative research was carried out, during which directors of companies in Alytus and Utena districts were interviewed (63 directors from Alytus and 56 from Utena). These districts were selected due to their geographical location as they have common borders with the countries (Belarus, Latvia, Poland) that took part in the comparative research. The majority of the companies were established after 1991. Hade and production joint stock companies of different size dominated. Most of the companies were based in towns with the population of 10,000-50,000. The most frequent reason for establishing a company was the residence of the owner or cheap manpower. The major difficulties encountered by the companies were fiscal policies and weak purchasing power. The business is mostly carried on with German, Polish, Russian, Swedish and other companies. The main cooperation trend is production components and new products. Small companies expect competitiveness from private and the major ones from international companies. The main human factors influencing the successful companies’ activities and employees’ career were indicated as the ability to communicate with people, persistent work, computer literacy, etc. There are no major difference between the regions in the competitiveness, though more favourable conditions, geographical location, transport system and more marketable production are based in Alytus region.
