LTVienas pirmųjų mokslininkų, savo raštuose 1909–1916 m. išsamiai aptarinėjęs lietuvių etninės muzikos ypatybes lietuvių kalba, buvo Mikas Petrauskas (1873–1937). Tuo metu lietuvių etnomuzikologinė terminija dar nebuvo nusistovėjusi, tad dauguma ten vartojamų terminų ar sąvokų šiuo metu gali būti suvokiama kaip istorinė šios terminijos ištakų, formavimosi ir paieškų proceso dalis. Straipsnyje pateikiami ir aptariami būdingi M. Petrausko terminai, apibūdinantys lietuvių liaudies dainų, instrumentinės muzikos ir tradicinės choreografijos ypatybes. ENOne of the most outstanding scientific personalities, described various peculiarities of Lithuanian ethnic music in his Lithuanian language writings, published in USA in the years 1909–1916 was Mikas Petrauskas (1873–1937). The terminology of Lithuanian ethnomusicology was not created those times, and a great part of used by him terms might be understood as the presentations of early forms of such terminology sources, reflecting process of their creation and formation. Some part of such early terms are not acceptable in contemporary Lithuanian ethnomusicological literature, and they are out of use. Another part of them are as nice examples of Lithuanian language poetic imagery, describing the actual peculiarities of Lithuanian folk songs melodic lines, tunes, rhythmic formations and intonation vocabulary. Mikas Petrauskas published three his main articles on the various and many–sided peculiarities of Lithuanian folk songs, such as "Iš muzikos srities [Concerning Musical Sources]. Lietuva, 1909 05 28 – 06 04, Chicago, Illinois"; "Lietuvių muzika [Lithuanian Music]. Laisvoji mintis, 1912, No. 35, 36, 37, 39, Chicago"; and "Mažas muzikos žodynėlis [Small Vocabulary of Music]. Lithuanian Music Conservatoire. Boston, Mass., 1916". He analyzed melodic lines, musical modes, tunes and rhythmic formulas of one-voice and two-voices Lithuanian folk songs, constructional elements of Lithuanian traditional music instruments and traditional choreography. In some cases, especially describing the musical tunes, he used official terminology from those times known from Ancient Greek music theory. All the other terms he had to create himself.All terminological descriptions by Mikas Petrauskas are actual sources both for historical and contemporary Lithuanian ethnomusicology, and for Lithuanian linguistic and literary examinations, as the proclamations of historical terminology sources, its creation and early formation in the period of the beginning of the 20th century.
