ENThere is tradition of cultural activity that was formed in Viekšniai which has encouraged its prominent personalities to contribute to the preservation of the history of the area. Ethnographer Amelija Urbienė (1909-1997) is a little-known but important person in relation to the culture of the area. Raised in Viekšniai, she studied at Kaunas University Humanities Faculty and lived her long life alongside translator, linguist and dictionary compiler Dominykas Urbas. One of the aspects of Urbienė's ethnographic and also creative output is her book "Me and my grandparents" with the subheading "Images of Childhood" published by Vyturys publishing house in 1989. The artist Audrius Puipa, who lived a tragically short life (1960-1997), created professional and realistic illustrations and also drew Amclija's portrait for the book. This book is not just a childhood memoir, it is also a statement of the lifestyle, people's relations, and surroundings of old Samogitia and Viekšniai that are long gone. Without doubt, Amelija Urbienė's book "Me and my grandparents" belongs to the cultural heritage of Viekšniai and there is great worth in having it published again. [From the publication]
