LTStraipsnyje aptariami Mykolo Biržiškos laiškai Petrui Jonikui: laiškų Ūpas, bendrieji bruožai, vyraujančios temos, kalba. Analizuojama, kaip laiškuose atsispindi darbo ir kasdienio gyvenimo sritys, kaip nuo tematikos priklauso laiškų kalbinė raiška. Nagrinėjami intertekstiniai elementai, šnekamosios kalbos intarpai, refleksijos. Aptariamos M. Biržiškos naujos tapatybės JAV paieškos, savikūros kryptys. Parodoma, kad M. Biržiškos laiškai yra mokslininko ir privataus žmogaus gyvenimo ir asmenybės atspindžiai, leidžiantys pakoreguoti, papildyti jo biografiją JAV laikotarpiu. Konstatuojama, kad laiškai rašyti kaip tam tikra pokalbio forma, reiškiama kalbėjimą žyminčiais žodžiais. Laiškų tyrimas papildo ankstesnius M. Biržiškos ir P. Joniko gyvenimo ir veiklos tyrinėjimus. ENThe focus of the present article is 136 letters of Mykolas Biržiška to Petras Jonikas, written in 1949-62, in exile to the United States. A short introduction of the signatory of the Act of Independence, professor Biržiška, and his addressee, professor of linguistics Jonikas, is presented. While Biržiška lived in Lithuania, the object of his scholarly research was mainly related with Lithuanian studies. In emigration the professor had to search for a new identity and reevaluate everything that he found customary and important in Lithuania. His letters reflect how a person of an advanced age, highly competent and acclaimed in his homeland, feels like a burden in a new community, unnecessary, incapable of doing his usual work, and unable to make a living. H is letters show how important his family becomes at this time. In the article, the general features of the letters are discussed. It is noted that the letters are interesting not only in their contents, but also in their form. Biržiška's letters are handwritten, and his handwriting and other manuscript-related features contain additional information about Biržiška's habits and moods of that period. The analysis of the general features of the letters shows that they should be attributed to the texts of syncretic type, when glimpses of daily life and reflections on changed conditions of life are inserted into a discussion of professional issues.Characterized by a lack of distance and sincerity, the letters contain a great deal of elements of the spoken language and show the increasing use of English words. They are valuable to the researchers of individual language. The author of the article discusses the topics prevalent in the letters: scholarly research, the history of founding the Institute for Lithuanian Studies, the editing and publishing of Aleksandrynas, reflections of daily life, and the linguistic features of the letters. The letters containing a great many words signifying speaking are written as a form of conversation. The analysis of the letters supplements the earlier research into the life and activity of Biržiška and Jonikas. [From the publication]
