ENThe noble family of von Lieven, who trace their origins to Kaup, a leader of the Livonian tribe who lived in the Baltic lands in the 13th century, is discussed in the article. Much attention is dedicated to the genealogy and heraldry of this influential German-Swedish family The career and land property of its most distinct representatives is described. Von Lievens held high positions in the military, political, and civil structures of tsarist Russia and the Kingdom of Sweden. The monarchs of these states not only gave estates gifts to the representatives of various branches of this large family for their merits, but also granted the titles of barons, counts, and dukes. ßoth men and women contributed to the thriving of the family. In 1826 the widow Chariotte Margaretha von Lieven, a governess to the emperor's family, received the inherited title of countess from tsar Nikolay I. Historical research of this family with its roots in Courland is important to all the contemporary Baltic countries, Ukraine, and the Netherlands. [From the publication]
