ENUrban environment and quality of its physical aspects are very important for modern society as they affect social phenomena. This influence is not very clear. Commonly the analysis of urban environment confines to estimation of the influence of its physical aspects on living conditions. The aim of the present work is to disclose the influence of physical aspects on urban environment. The paper discusses the issue of the urbanized environment quality concept, reviews the premises of the interaction between its physical aspects and social economic phenomena and analyses two aspects of the influence produced by the physical quality of urban environment on social phenomena: • Diversity of urban land types in different natural landscapes; • Attitude of Lithuanian urban population towards the status and importance of physical environment. During this work we obtained some important results. The system of indices of physical environment is one of them. This system enables to follow and control the quality of urban environment in Lithuania. Permanent observation (monitoring) of environment quality could demonstrate the efficiency of environment protection and planning and provide a clear idea about living conditions and quality of cities. The investigation of physical environment, as business conditions factor, and analysis of the general tendencies of choosing the quarters by companies transpired that the influence of physical environment is usually regarded as ancillary. The complexity and expression of the influence directly depend on particular types of economic activity. The long-term integral interaction between the physical components of urban environment and social processes in concrete landscape conditions is revealed by the structure of urban land types.Analysis of naturalness of Lithuanian urban territories according to this structure showed than the difference of these indices in the cities, situated in various landscapes, may be even 10-fold. On the other hand, during the time frame of investigation (since 1965) these differences have considerably reduced. It was determined that despite of the rapid urbanization the naturalness of the urban territories have increased (mostly due to their physical expansion). Summing up the results of interviews the authors found out that citizenry estimate approvingly the general quality of environment in Lithuania. Since the view on environment and its components and their quality in cities is favourable, most respondents stated, that they like to live in their own city (53.3%) or they like it very much (29.2%). These data show high level of identification with the living place, what suggests a sufficiently good quality of urban environment in Lithuanian cities. [From the publication]
