ENAn attempt is made of comparing the land use areas of Vilnius city based on the data of 1938 and 2000 and revealing the causes of differences. The land use in 1938 and 2000 was analysed by cartographic method. Emphasis was placed on the functional changes of Vilnius areas (industrial, residential, public, and natural). The reference area (46.68 km2) was distinguished on the map of Vilnius city of 1938 (Plan…, 1938). In 1938, the greater part of Vilnius territory was represented by unused areas and farmlands (Fig. 1). The urban residential, public, industrial and infrastructural areas accounted for only 17.8%. This was predetermined by political decision of extensive development of the city. In 2000, the industrial, public, infrastructural and residential areas expanded at the expense of the unused areas and farmlands. Somewhere (Table 2) such areas accounted for 80% of the total territory. These changes were induced by Soviet industrialization and construction works. The expansion of industrial areas was a result of Soviet industrialization. The expansion of residential territories was related with the increasing social welfare. The residential quarters occupied the former rural areas. Notwithstanding the intensive construction works in the years of the Soviet power the natural areas in the reference territory of Vilnius city reduced but little. [From the publication]
