ENCurrently the question of linguistic rights of national minorities, especially in Vilnius Region is one of the most contentious issues in the socio-political life of Lithuania. Mainly because of the unresolved problems that lead to the manifestations of civil disobedience. The aim of the article is to present the legal and actual situation of the protection of the linguistic rights of persons belonging to national minority in Lithuania - especially the use of minority languages in public and in communications with local administrative authorities, the right to use their language in the electoral process, as well as the right to display topographical indications also in the minority language the right to use their first name and surname in their own language. Presented in the article analysis was put in the time perspective - it will refer to the situation when Law on national minorities from 1989 was in force, as well as will contain some practical recommendations on the issue of effective protection of linguistic rights of national minorities in Lithuania in the future.
